Germany’s digital infrastructure is at a pivotal moment, with fibre-optic expansion declared a public priority by 2030. Yet, fibre rollout faces hurdles like fragmented efforts and jurisdictional overlaps. Key to advancement is fostering cooperation among providers and policymakers, not just technical fixes. Unlocking a collaborative approach will accelerate Germany’s digital transformation.
Vodafone Germany is revolutionizing its VoIP landscape by expanding fibre broadband to 11 million homes and businesses. This strategic move solidifies Vodafone as the operator of Germany’s largest fibre network. Leveraging partnerships with Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Glasfaser, Vodafone promises 11 million new VoIP-enabled connections, enhancing connectivity options.
Deutsche Telekom has joined the German Federal Association for Fiber Optic Connections (BUGLAS), marking a significant step in fiber infrastructure promotion. This move aims to enhance nationwide fiber expansion through partnerships. However, it has sparked mixed reactions, with critics concerned it might hinder Germany’s overall fiber rollout and benefit Deutsche Telekom’s market dominance.
A recent study conducted by Germany’s Verband für Telekommunikation und Mehrwertdienste (VATM) has illuminated the rapid advancements within Germany’s fiber market. The study highlights a steady stride in the country’s fiber rollout, projecting that nearly 19 million households, approximately half of the German population, will have access to fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) connectivity by mid-year, marking a rise of 2 million households since the close of 2023.
Several prominent German telecoms associations, including ANGA, Bitkom, BREKO, BUGLAS, and VATM, have united in a call to the German government, urging a reduction in funding for fibre-optic projects. Citing concerns over the overwhelming response to the German Gigabit funding program, the associations propose a cut in funding to €1 billion between 2024-2026.
Ingbert Liebing, VKU Chief, calls for decisive action from BNetzA to ensure Deutsche Telekom’s transparency in its fiber expansion plans. VKU argues that Telekom’s vague plans have hampered national FTTH deployment. However, Deutsche Telekom views this as fair competition. With over 300 complaints about overbuilding, Juergen Grützner, VATM MD believes clearer regulation is urgent to meet expansion goals.
