EE’s rapid 5G small cell deployment, with over 1,000 active installations, marks a significant advancement in the UK’s mobile infrastructure. These small cells, strategically deployed in high-demand areas like London, enhance mobile capacity and performance. Leveraging advanced network analytics and collaboration with partners like Nokia and Ericsson, EE optimizes network efficiency, ensuring top-notch connectivity.

In an ambitious move to counteract the issue of network congestion within city environments, UK mobile operator Three has initiated a pioneering project in Glasgow, employing the advanced technology of Mavenir. The initiative focuses on the strategic placement of small cell units across the city to enhance urban connectivity, particularly in areas where 5G coverage is inconsistent.

NAVIGATE, part of the UK’s ONE competition, involves renowned telecom providers NEC and Freshwave, working to create a neutral host small cell solution for areas with high signal demand. This project, backed by a substantial £7.42 million funding, aligns with the UK Government’s goal of diversifying the 5G supply chain and nurturing Open RAN spaces. NEC and Freshwave will develop an energy efficient, financially viable solution based on NEC’s Open vRAN software that could significantly boost the multi-operator neutral host network. As the UK joins forces with Australia, Canada, Japan, and the US in the Global Coalition on Telecommunications, this project may herald an inventive, cooperative future for the telecoms industry.

EE is boosting 5G in central London with 80 small cells in Westminster, enhancing coverage through discreet installations on structures like lampposts. In partnership with Ontix, Nokia and Ericsson, this expansion supports EE’s goal of nationwide 5G by 2028 while improving performance in high-demand areas using advanced network analytics and cutting-edge standalone 5G technology.
