LG Uplus launches preliminary 5G roaming services in China South Korean mobile carrier LG UPlus is rolling out its 5G roaming service in China in partnership with China Unicom, a state-run telecom operator. According to the statement, LG Uplus teamed up with China Unicom for the 5G roaming service in April and tested out own services in China from June. The preliminary service was launched after the two companies completed linking their networks on August 16. LG Uplus said its 5G roaming service is currently available only on the LG V50 ThinQ smartphone, but soon it will be expanded to Samsung Galaxy S10 and Note 10 users with software upgrades. SK Telecom, Samsung, Nokia and Ericsson partner for 6G R&D

The global race for future technologies has accelerated even further, with the South Korean wireless carrier SK Telecom announcing that it is joining forces with network hardware providers Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung Electronics to carry out collaborative research and development projects to pave the way for 6G mobile network technologies. The partnership will also help to upgrade the already-advanced 5G technology, and expand its adoption in other areas, including self-driving cars and in-built solutions. Telenor and Axiata work towards merging Asian operations

Norwegian telco Telenor Group and Malaysia-based Axiata Group have announced their discussions regarding a prospective non-cash merger of their telecom and infrastructure assets in Asia, in which Telenor would take a majority stake. Telenor and Axiata’s jointly owned telecommunications giant MergeCo would combine the two companies’ operations in South and Southeast Asia, and in its headquarters in Malaysia would serve almost 300 million customers using approximately 60,000 communication towers located across Asia. Motorola Solutions acquires VoIP dispatch system developer Avtec

Motorola Solutions has announced the acquisition of Avtec Inc., the top U.S. provider of advanced dispatch products for public safety and commercial customers. Additional details of the transaction, which closed on the 11th of March, were not released. Based in South Carolina, Avtec specializes in voice over internet protocol (VoIP) dispatch services using land mobile radio (LMR) and broadband networks. The company offers solutions and products that enable customers, including airlines, railroads and energy companies, to connect their personnel in operations centers with workers in the field using two-way radios. Motorola Solutions, a global leader in mission-critical communications, has been reselling the Avtec consoles to its MOTOTRBO customers. ZTE and Intel set to transform access networks with Light Cloud

ZTE Corporation and Intel have jointly launched the Light Cloud platform for access networks at the 5G Summit being held at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona. The Light Cloud solution is based on Intel’s innovative Edge products, impeccably integrated into ZTE’s flagship optical fiber access platform, Titan, thus merging Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) and Network function virtualization (NFVI). The solution employs lightweight blade servers equipped with Intel Xeon D processors. When embedded in an OLT or BRAS device, the blade servers transform it into lightweight cloud infrastructure, thus reducing high capital costs and making a positive environmental impact.
