Google has announced the development of Bard, an AI-powered conversational service that will compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The technology, dubbed an “experimental conversational AI service,” will respond to users’ inquiries and engage in discussions. The program will first be made accessible to a select number of “trusted testers,” before being freely available in the near future.   Google has deep expertise in the sort of AI that powers ChatGPT. However, the business has been more cautious about making its AI technologies accessible to the general public. LaMDA, the language model that supports Bard, has already been made accessible through Google’s AI Test Kitchen program, although it has certain limitations.   Tech businesses are generally concerned about the possible backlash against untested AI. Large language models like LaMDA and GPT-3.5 have a history of producing harmful information.   With the introduction of Bard, Google has significantly changed its approach to AI…

T-Mobile has announced its latest sustainability initiative, a commitment to reach net-zero emissions across its entire carbon footprint by 2040. The operator has also joined The Climate Pledge, a community of organizations working together to combat global carbon emissions.    T-Mobile is the first wireless company in the United States to set a net-zero objective that has been certified by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) using its Net-Zero Standard. The target includes direct and indirect emissions from T-Mobile’s operations and facilities, purchased electricity, and all remaining indirect scope 3 emissions, such as those produced by suppliers, customer device usage, materials, employee travel and other factors, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the company’s total carbon footprint.   The Climate Pledge, launched in 2019 by Amazon and Global Optimism, is a pledge to reach net-zero emissions 10 years before the date targeted by the Paris Agreement. T-Mobile joins almost 400 companies…

XConnect, a provider of numbering intelligence solutions, has announced a partnership with IDT Global, the wholesale voice and SMS subsidiary of IDT Corporation.    The partnership will see IDT Global utilize XConnect’s RealNumber DNO database, which contains over 6 billion local and toll-free numbers in North America, in order to enhance its customers’ voice experience and protect them from fraudulent calls.   The RealNumber DNO contains numbers that should never be used for call origination, assisting in the prevention of telecom fraud on known inbound-only and invalid numbers. By accessing the RealNumber DNO, IDT Global will be able to identify invalid calls and increase the quality of its traffic. This database is updated daily and includes North American toll/local and toll-free lines, providing IDT Global with a complete and trustworthy additional layer of defense in its role as a gateway operator.   The collaboration also further expands XConnect’s optimization of…

This newly created position combines these different roles for the first time.   When it comes to sustainability, Telia is regarded as one of the telecom companies with more progressive thinking. The corporation has established specific goals to achieve a value chain that will be  carbon neutral by 2030 by at least halving greenhouse gas emissions and offsetting the remainder.   In addition, Telia has mandated that its suppliers set science-based goals, and last year it was disclosed that 29% of the suppliers participating in  its supply chain emissions had already done so, with a further 21% in the process of receiving…

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has put forward a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that gives airlines an additional year, until February 1, 2024, to address faulty altimeters in their aircraft.    These altimeters, which measure an airplane’s height above the earth’s surface, are present on 7,993 planes registered in the United States. The FAA believes that 180 of these altimeters will need to be completely replaced, while 820 will need filters added to comply with the proposed modification requirement. This upgrade is expected to cost a total of $26 million.   The ruling is part of a settlement reached between the aviation and cellular sectors after AT&T and Verizon paid $69 billion for C-Band spectrum licenses. Airplane altimeters typically operate in the 4.2 – 4.4 GHz frequency, but certain altimeters cannot filter out 5G signals from the carriers’ spectrum in the 3.7-3.98 GHz range.   The FAA is therefore…

T-Mobile has engaged in a marketing campaign called “Make Xfinity Your Ex” that aims to convince Comcast Xfinity customers to switch to T-Mobile’s fixed wireless access (FWA) 5G Home and Business Internet service.   As part of the campaign, a T-Mobile billboard truck has been driving circles around Comcast’s headquarters in Philadelphia for 25 hours, playing a video that highlights Comcast’s price hikes over the years.    In addition to the billboard truck, T-Mobile is offering its FWA 5G service for $25 per month, not including taxes and fees, with a qualifying voice line for a limited time, and is giving Comcast Xfinity customers up to $750 to break their contracts.   The campaign is a direct attack on Comcast, which is set to raise prices on its TV and internet services, with an average rate increase of 3.8% for customers nationwide starting December 20. This follows a rate hike…

According to the Federal Communications Commission, callers must receive the recipient’s permission before leaving “ringless voicemails.” The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has unanimously concluded that these quiet voicemails are subject to the same Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) provisions that prohibit robocalls without authorization.  Each year, the FCC receives numerous consumer complaints about ringless voicemail. As a result, the Commission has made it clear that robocalls, including ringless voicemail, are unlawful if they are made without the recipient’s prior affirmative consent. This decision took effect on the same day that it was made public, November 21, 2022. Any non-emergency call made to a wireless telephone number utilizing an automatic telephone dialing system or an artificial or prerecorded voice is now forbidden under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which safeguards customers against unwanted robocalls. This decision comes five years after All About the Message, LLC (AATM) petitioned the…
