Virgin Media expands its gigabit network Virgin Media has successfully upgraded 1.5 million additional premises to DOCSIS 3.1, allowing users to achieve internet speeds exceeding one gigabit per second. Over half of the 15.5 million subscriber homes in the UK may now get gigabit services thanks to this latest initiative. Vodafone Germany to build new base stations and 5G Vodafone Germany has announced that it will undertake more than 7,000 mobile infrastructure construction projects including 3,000 5G projects, which it estimates will support 9,000 5G antennas. The projects will take place in the current financial year, which began in April. ComReg opens up additional spectrum to create more capacity for telcos

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg), the Irish national regulatory authority, and the current Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton TD have signed new regulations that will allow the release of additional radio spectrum to create extra capacity for mobile phone and broadband services. These are temporary measures taken in response to a sharp increase in the use of mobile networks, as people rely more heavily on their operators to communicate and stay connected during COVID-19 social distancing. According to ComReg, mobile operators have coped well with increased usage so far, but they have currently less headroom to accommodate further spikes in demand. Telecoms company Entegro opens new fiber network and design center

Entegro, an Irish tech company which designs and deploys fiber and hybrid gigabit networks, has announced the opening of its new Fiber Network Design Centre of Excellence. Based in the Danville Business Park on the edge of Kilkenny City, Ireland, the company’s new facility is set to create 50 jobs over the next 18 months. Currently employing 100 people, Entegro said it has immediate vacancies for planning and design, fiber planning, GIS and other engineers. “We’ve nine different nationalities working on our 100-strong team here in Kilkenny, at our Dublin hub and in the UK,” said Fintan Shortall, Director of Business Development at Entegro. “From our headquarters in Kilkenny we’re building networks across Ireland, the UK and into the US.
