Virgin Media O2 has embarked on a significant mobile connectivity enhancement by launching the O2 Satellite service. Powered by Starlink Direct to Cell technology from SpaceX, this initiative grants users connectivity in areas traditionally lacking mobile coverage, termed ‘not-spots’.

The introduction of this satellite-to-mobile service elevates Virgin Media O2’s UK landmass coverage from 89% to an impressive 95%, covering an area two-thirds the size of Wales. O2 Satellite seamlessly integrates with the existing O2 mobile network. Users automatically transition to satellite service when out of traditional cellular range. This feature offers reliability for those travelling or participating in outdoor activities like hiking and sailing.

Additionally, O2 Satellite acts as a backup during cellular network outages, ensuring a continuous connection. At its launch, the service supports text messaging and data for apps such as WhatsApp and Google Maps. Initially, it is available to users of the latest Samsung smartphones, with plans for broader compatibility in the future.

This service comes from a groundbreaking partnership with SpaceX. Utilizing Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites, O2 can deliver connectivity directly to devices using licensed mobile spectrum from space. Following successful trials among its employees, Virgin Media O2 now offers O2 Satellite as a £3-per-month add-on. Ultimate Plan subscribers will soon access it at no extra cost.

Lutz Schüler, CEO of Virgin Media O2, described the launch as “a defining moment for UK mobile connectivity and a statement of our intent to keep innovating and ensure our customers can stay connected no matter where they are.” Baroness Lloyd, Minister for the Digital Economy, praised the project as “a major achievement for the UK,” reflecting the nation’s leadership in advanced connectivity.

Stephanie Bednarek from Starlink highlighted the importance of maintaining connectivity everywhere: “For the first time, millions of people across the UK will have access to data, voice, and video through apps, and messaging in remote areas where terrestrial coverage isn’t available.”

O2 Satellite’s debut follows recent UK regulatory approval for satellite-to-smartphone services by Ofcom. This technology promises to enhance communication capabilities, especially where mobile networks fall short. Virgin Media O2’s recent accolades include recognition as the most improved mobile network across Europe and Best Mobile Network Coverage at the Uswitch Telecoms Awards.
