e& UAE has tested eRedCap on a live commercial network. The operator says this marks a global first for the technology.
The trial matters because many enterprises still depend on LTE for everyday connected devices. These devices often need long battery life, wide coverage, and low operating costs. They rarely need the full speed of advanced 5G services.
eRedCap, or enhanced Reduced Capability, fills that middle ground. It supports lower-complexity devices that send modest amounts of data. These include smart meters, factory sensors, asset trackers, payment terminals, building systems, security devices, and some wearables.
As a result, the technology could help businesses shift more IoT services to modern networks. It may also reduce pressure to maintain separate LTE-based systems for years. That could simplify planning for operators and enterprise IT teams.
However, eRedCap will not replace every IoT option overnight. Some very low-power devices may still suit older narrowband technologies. Other applications, such as cameras or industrial automation, may need fuller 5G performance.
Device availability will also shape adoption. Enterprises need compatible modules, tested hardware, and clear service models. Without that ecosystem, live network readiness alone may not drive fast migration.
Still, the trial gives sectors such as utilities and logistics a practical signal. It shows that 5G can serve more than premium smartphones and high-bandwidth services. It can also support basic connected infrastructure at scale.
The technology could also support 5G Standalone strategies. 5G Standalone uses a full 5G core network. This gives operators more control over services, performance, and future network features.
Abdulrahman Al Humaidan, VP of Access Network Development at e& UAE, highlighted that position. He said: “The value of eRedCap is the ability to bring practical, everyday IoT applications into the 5G era at the right cost, power profile and coverage.
“By proving this capability on our live commercial network, e& UAE is giving utilities, manufacturers, logistics providers, smart-city operators and other sectors a credible path to scale connected devices and prepare for the industry’s long-term transition beyond LTE.”
For telecom engineers, the message is clear. The 5G roadmap is moving deeper into operational IoT. For enterprises, the appeal lies in controlled migration, not sudden replacement. If device support grows, eRedCap may become a key bridge beyond LTE.
