Telia Finland demonstrated its 5G network slicing by remotely operating an armoured vehicle nearly 100 kilometres away during military drills in Lapland. The successful test highlights how advanced connectivity can enable real-time control for defence applications, marking a significant step in unmanned systems and secure cross-border cooperation amid Finland’s evolving security landscape.

The Finnish telecommunications equipment provider Nokia and Swedish operator group Telia joined forces to conduct a trial assessing the utility of the 6 GHz spectrum for massive MIMO 5G. Their outdoor trial, held at Nokia’s Research and Development center in Espoo, Finland, featured the utilization of a 128TRX antenna based on Nokia’s AirScale Habrok radio and a test terminal from MediaTek equipped with integrated antennas. While specifics on speeds and feeds remain undisclosed, the trial reportedly proceeded successfully.

Telia, Sweden’s telecom giant, is reportedly considering selling off its broadcasting division, TV4, with negotiations in progress with potential buyers. This comes as TV4’s value declines, attributed to dwindling ad revenue and challenges with premium sports content. Critics suggest Telia misunderstood the complexities of the TV industry, with former CEO of TV4, Jan Scherman, openly critical of the acquisition.

With BT Group’s current CEO Philip Jansen’s departure on the horizon, the telecommunications industry is abuzz as Telia’s top-notch leader Allison Kirkby is slated to step into his shoes in 2024. Equipped with a celebrated career within the telecom sector and experience as a non-executive director at BT since 2019, Kirkby’s ascension is anxiously anticipated.

Ericsson and Telia join forces to establish the Baltics’ first enterprise 5G network at a key supply site in Estonia, aiming to enhance productivity, agility, and sustainability, while enabling connected use cases like asset monitoring, digital twins, and more. This collaboration also boosts Ericsson’s growing private 5G offerings and emphasizes the potential of private 5G networks in driving innovation across various industries.
