T-Mobile has engaged in a marketing campaign called “Make Xfinity Your Ex” that aims to convince Comcast Xfinity customers to switch to T-Mobile’s fixed wireless access (FWA) 5G Home and Business Internet service.   As part of the campaign, a T-Mobile billboard truck has been driving circles around Comcast’s headquarters in Philadelphia for 25 hours, playing a video that highlights Comcast’s price hikes over the years.    In addition to the billboard truck, T-Mobile is offering its FWA 5G service for $25 per month, not including taxes and fees, with a qualifying voice line for a limited time, and is giving Comcast Xfinity customers up to $750 to break their contracts.   The campaign is a direct attack on Comcast, which is set to raise prices on its TV and internet services, with an average rate increase of 3.8% for customers nationwide starting December 20. T-Mobile is collaborating with SpaceX to expand its network coverage. Last week, the two businesses announced that they will collaborate to provide extensive cellular access, including full coverage in most parts of the United States.   The collaboration seeks to beam down connectivity using SpaceX’s fleet of low Earth orbit satellites for the benefit of T-Mobile customers. With this initiative, T-Mobile consumers should be able to connect to the SpaceX satellites through a new network, transmitted from Starlink’s satellites utilizing T-Mobile’s midband spectrum across the country. SpaceX currently provides home internet access globally through its Starlink program.   Even though T-Mobile hasn’t yet provided details on the network’s deployment, the company claims that this collaboration should provide nearly complete coverage almost anywhere in the US. T-Mobile US has begun offering commercial Voice-over-5G (also known as Voice over New Radio, or VoNR) in certain regions of Portland, Oregon, and Salt Lake City, Utah, with the intention of expanding the service to a larger area later this year.    VoNR, which is based on 5G Standalone (5G SA) network technology, is now available on the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G smartphone and will be available later this year on a variety of additional 5G handsets, including the Galaxy S22.   Voice over 5G represents a significant hurdle for the whole wireless industry, however all US providers will most certainly want to transition voice calling to 5G at some point in the future to free up LTE spectrum for 5G. T-Mobile has announced their collaboration with CTIA, the wireless industry association, to create best practices for new and improved Caller ID features for corporations. Businesses and organizations will be able to provide confirmed calls with an immediately identifiable Caller ID display, including the organization’s logo or name, on compatible handsets using this new Branded Caller ID (BCI) service.   BCI, according to the company, builds on the STIR/SHAKEN framework’s verification by affirmatively identifying businesses or organizations that are calling, such as doctor’s offices and banks, so that these parties can reach their customers, who are currently reluctant to answer unknown numbers and may miss important and wanted calls. T-Mobile US is experimenting with fiber broadband by launching a symmetrical gigabit fiber service in New York City. The service is offered for a fixed monthly fee, but the prices have not yet been announced.   This service, which offers 940Mbps upload and download rates as well as a WiFi 6 router, is now being tested in selected Manhattan apartment buildings. The company is undertaking a very restricted trial with a third-party supplier to offer residential internet using fiber-optic lines from that partner rather than deploying its own lines. T-Mobile did not reveal the identity of its local partner.   The decision to collaborate with a local broadband provider is consistent with T-Mobile’s well-known practice of leasing rather than constructing fiber for its cell sites. T-Mobile US, an American wireless network operator, has announced a partnership with Zyter, a provider of cloud-based, software as a service (SaaS) digital health products. The companies are partnering to deliver virtual healthcare solutions to healthcare organizations and their patients across the US, including telehealth and remote patient monitoring and care team collaboration.    The alliance comes at a time of high demand for virtual healthcare. Since the start of the pandemic, 51% of US residents have expressed concern about visiting hospitals and other healthcare facilities.   The partnership aims to make virtual care accessible to more people in order to improve patient outcomes, lower readmission hospital rates and improve patient wellbeing. It has been announced that Deutsche Telekom, a German telecommunications company, is looking to sell its Dutch subsidiary T-Mobile Netherlands for approximately €5-6 billion. The company is aiming to sell the Dutch mobile phone operator to private equity investors.   In 2015, Deutsche Telekom was unsuccessful in trying to sell T-Mobile Netherlands in an attempt to reduce its debt and raise funds to help acquire spectrum for T-Mobile US. Six years ago, the company considered leaving the Dutch market and had seen interest from Liberty Global. Nonetheless, the potential sale did not go through and Liberty Global later merged the Ziggo cable unit with Vodafone Netherlands.   Since then, the Dutch unit has grown. Instead of seeking another buyer, Deutsche Telekom decided to expand its operations in the country. In 2017, the company published a €190 million merger with Tele2’s local branch. As 5G technology continues to mature, leading global wireless carriers are competing to be the first to advance from the non-standalone (NSA) mode of 5G, in which a 4G LTE core is combined with 5G capabilities, to a standalone architecture (SA) 5G network. T-Mobile US, one of the largest carriers providing wireless voice, messaging and data services in the United States, has announced the launch of its SA 5G network. The operator claims to be the first in the world with nationwide coverage using this next-generation wireless technology. In a news release, T-Mobile said that the launch expands its 5G coverage by 30 percent and will cover nearly 250 million people in more than 7,500 cities and towns throughout the US. New Jersey, US-based Synchronoss Technologies has announced that it is working with a new joint venture formed by the four largest mobile operators in the United States – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon – to speed up the delivery of an advanced mobile messaging service to consumers and businesses in all four mobile networks. The US tech giants have recently launched Cross Carrier Messaging Initiative (CCMI) and will cooperate with cloud, messaging, digital and IoT product specialist Synchronoss to offer a compatible Rich Communications Services (RCS) application to Android devices in 2020. This platform, based on the RCS standard that was developed together with technology partner WIT Software, can create a messaging ecosystem that allows consumer brands to attain a new level of engagement.
