A group of consumer and privacy organizations, including the National Consumer Law Center and the Electronic Privacy Information Center, are urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deny petitions aimed at allowing unsolicited bulk text messaging. The organization, which is made up of numerous telephone users from all around the country, feels that enabling such unwanted messages would be detrimental to customers.   In response to a proposed rulemaking in November 2022, some individuals have urged the FCC to allow businesses to send unwanted mass text messages to consumers without their consent. This would result in a rise in unwelcome texts, such as bothersome surveys, recurrent political messaging, and pestering debt collection requests. Meta was fined €265 million by Irish regulators on Monday. This is the company’s latest penalty for violating rigorous European Union data privacy regulations.    According to the Data Protection Commission (DPC), Meta Platforms Inc. violated parts of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which require technological and organizational measures to secure user data.   The authority began looking into press reports that user data for more than 533 million people was discovered to have been leaked online last year. This information was detected on a website for hackers, and includes names, Facebook IDs, phone numbers, residences, birthdates and email addresses of individuals from more than 100 different countries.   The DPC investigation discovered that Meta’s Facebook Search, Facebook Messenger Contact Importer and Instagram Contact Importer capabilities did not adhere to GDPR rules between May 25, 2018 and September 19, 2019.   According to Meta, the information was “scraped”…

YouMail released a new robocall warning, saying that utility-related impostor robocalls are posing a concern to Americans. These utility scam calls claiming to be from major American gas, electric, and other utilities in order to swindle unwary victims by threatening them with instant disconnection if their “utility bills” are not paid quickly.   The specifics of the scam calls differ, but they typically claim that the user’s service is going to be terminated and that they need to click a key to make a payment or speak to someone at the business. Some calls are made from an entirely random phone number and mention a generic firm name. Others link to certain departments by using a local phone number with the recipient’s area code. In late July, Samsung Electronics experienced a cybersecurity incident that resulted in the exposure of personal data of some American customers.
