According to a statement by ZTE, the opening of a new lab represents an important milestone for the company as it aims to increase transparency and enhance trust with third parties, including customers, global regulators and other stakeholders. This initiative is in direct response to the national security concerns that are prompting several countries to apply restrictions on the use of equipment from Chinese vendors in 5G rollouts. In 2020, Apple is anticipated to release its first 5G-enabled iPhone powered by chipsets from Qualcomm and Samsung, according to a report from reliable supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of  TF International Securities. Following Intel’s announcement earlier this month about exiting the 5G modem chip market for iPhones, Apple had to turn to Qualcomm to ensure the supply of a 5G modem chip. The tech-giant is also looking for a second supplier and, in all probability, this will be Samsung. “We expect Apple will likely adopt 5G baseband chips made by Qualcomm (focus on mmWave markets) and Samsung (focus on Sub-6GHz markets) for lowering supply risk, reducing costs and having better bargaining power,” said the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo believes that the introduction of a 5G-enabled iPhone could create a wave of upgrades and purchases, especially for the high-end models. “We are positive on the high-end iPhone models’ replacement…

The global ridesharing and taxi company, Uber, has rolled out a new VoIP calling feature as another method for drivers and riders to communicate with each other. Similar to other VoIP communication applications such as Skype, this feature will require an Internet connection instead of a mobile voice service in order to make calls. Riders and drivers on Uber can already communicate by using in-app chats, sending SMS or making voice calls over their mobile service provider’s network. Yet VoIP calling caught Uber’s attention when the company noticed that in some countries, particularly when traveling abroad, data calling is cheaper than calling over a mobile voice network. Besides this new feature assisting the company to expand their services on a global scale, this advancement will be of great assistance to drivers, as they will be able to stay within the Uber app while handling voice calls. Moreover, the…

Connecting to a public WiFi network at airports, hotels or even at a local coffee shop is not always as safe as one might think, as intercepting private information sent over a public network is quite easy even for inexperienced hackers. As a result, Verizon has decided to combat this security vulnerability by launching a VPN for their customers, Safe Wi-Fi. This new service protects personal data from prying eyes, and blocks advertisement trackers by using VPN encryption. Safe Wi-Fi is available on iOS and Android devices for a fee of $3.99 per month, and can cover up to 10 devices linked to a Verizon account. Considering how much the theft of personal information might cost a user, this is a small price to pay for keeping important data secure.
