The French telecommunications provider Iliad, that provides fixed and mobile telephony services, prepaid phone cards, Internet access and hosting services, has signed a new $356 million loan deal with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to help the Iliad Group finance its mobile network deployment in France, in particular to consolidate its 4G network and deploy its 5G network. Since 2009, the EIB has financed Iliad, and with this new loan the total financing exceeds $1.3 billion. Having helped finance the development of the Iliad fixed network for more than a decade, the EIB is once again working with the group to provide financial support for the company’s latest generation of mobile networks. The South Korean wireless telecommunications operator, SK Telecom, and Germany’s telecommunications leader, Deutsche Telekom, recently signed an agreement to set up a joint venture to innovate 5G technology. This venture will incorporate advanced 5G building expertise and leverage the growth in the global demand for 5G repeaters. Both companies said their partnership will help complete the development of an advanced 5G/LTE dual-mode repeater that will give them an advantage in capturing a global market estimated, according to studies cited by the companies, to exceed $10 billion over the next three years. The JV is headquartered in Germany, and as a result, the work will begin in the European market. Twilio, a USA-based cloud communications platform, on Monday announced its largest acquisition to date. The company is buying the customer data startup Segment for $3.2 billion in Twilio Class A common stock, on a fully diluted and cash free, debt free basis. Segment is a customer data platform (CDP) that helps collect, clear and manage customer data. This platform allows organizations to move customer data from one application to another through an API, and use the platform to better control how the customer data travels through the systems. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2020, and Segment will emerge as a part of Twilio. This acquisition could help Twilio expand beyond its core communications capabilities, and also could bring approximately $5 billion in revenue to both companies. French telecommunications service provider Iliad S.A. has agreed to buy the Polish telecommunications company Play Communications S.A. for $2.6 billion as it expands across Europe. The deal will make Iliad the sixth largest mobile operator in Europe. In an announcement on Monday, the companies revealed that Iliad had offered $10.35 per share for Play and received binding commitments from two controlling shareholders for a 40% stake, which would give it the majority of seats on Play’s board of directors. Iliad also hopes that the deal will allow the company to enter the growing Polish telecommunications market and boost Play’s growth in the mobile sector. With the addition of Play, Iliad will have 41 million subscribers in France, Poland and Italy. However, the transaction still needs to be approved by the relevant regulatory authorities, and a notification of the proposed acquisition has to be submitted to the European Commission.…

The South Korean tech giant Samsung has announced that it has signed a contract to supply network equipment to Verizon in the US. Samsung and Verizon’s wireless telecommunications solutions contract is worth about $ 6.6 billion according to information released on Monday, ensuring a great triumph for the South Korean seller against established competitors. Samsung Networks will supply network equipment and solutions, including 5G, to their American partner for the next five years, until December 2025.
