Verizon has been awarded a $2.4 billion contract to update the US Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) telecommunications and information management systems. If all options are exercised, this agreement, which represents fresh business for the corporation, will last 15 years. The deal was awarded under the FAA Enterprise Network Services (FENS) procurement program, which replaces the old FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) contract system. Harris Corp., who was previously in possession of the FTI award, lost the contract. In addition to network access for administrative information systems such as email, payroll and online training, Verizon will offer telecommunications, information management services, network connectivity and other capabilities. Also, Verizon will offer services for program management, network engineering, test and evaluation, and network security management. According to Cisco’s first-ever Cybersecurity Readiness Index, just 15% of global organizations are rated to have the ‘Mature’ level of preparation required to be resistant to current cybersecurity hazards. The index illustrates where organizations are succeeding in cybersecurity preparedness and where deficiencies may worsen if global business and security leaders do not act.   The analysis assesses a company’s ability to sustain cybersecurity resilience in the face of new threats, and includes 19 distinct solutions across five basic pillars: identity, devices, networks, application workloads and data. In a poll of 6,700 private sector cybersecurity leaders from 27 markets, participants were questioned as to which of these technologies they had installed and the current stage of deployment. Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, is developing a service offering named Global Roaming Service. This service would allow customers to access the Internet from practically anyplace on Earth. The service will cost $200 each month in addition to the $599 Starlink Kit, according to a statement addressed to Starlink subscribers. Starlink employs inter-satellite connections, or space lasers, to enable global connectivity. As such, users can expect the service to be interrupted with brief periods of weak or no connectivity. Despite the promise of access to the internet almost everywhere, Starlink is still awaiting regulatory clearance in numerous countries, including India, Pakistan, and Cambodia. The current $135 a month Starlink RV plan allows users to equip their RVs with Starlink’s hardware for internet connection while traveling. T-Mobile has announced its latest sustainability initiative, a commitment to reach net-zero emissions across its entire carbon footprint by 2040. The operator has also joined The Climate Pledge, a community of organizations working together to combat global carbon emissions.    T-Mobile is the first wireless company in the United States to set a net-zero objective that has been certified by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) using its Net-Zero Standard. The target includes direct and indirect emissions from T-Mobile’s operations and facilities, purchased electricity, and all remaining indirect scope 3 emissions, such as those produced by suppliers, customer device usage, materials, employee travel and other factors, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the company’s total carbon footprint.   The Climate Pledge, launched in 2019 by Amazon and Global Optimism, is a pledge to reach net-zero emissions 10 years before the date targeted by the Paris Agreement. Mitel, a global business communications provider, has announced that it has entered into exclusive negotiations with Atos to acquire Unify, the Unified Communications and Collaboration (UCC) and Communication and Collaboration Services (CCS) businesses of the Atos group. The proposed purchase would boost Mitel’s organizational scope,  worldwide revenues and  profitability. With a combined client base of more than 75 million users in more than 100 countries and a channel network of more than 5,500 worldwide partners, Mitel and Unify would become a well-established UC leader in the Americas and Europe. As part of the proposed agreement, Mitel would acquire Unify’s voice platforms, collaboration and contact center solutions, device and endpoint portfolio, and related intellectual property. Telia Company, a Swedish telecommunications operator, has announced changes to its top management that will put sustainability at the forefront of the company’s agenda.   In March, Ola Rembe, a former executive at Ericsson, will become Senior Vice President and Head of Communications, Brand and Sustainability at Telia. This newly created position combines these different roles for the first time.   When it comes to sustainability, Telia is regarded as one of the telecom companies with more progressive thinking.
