T-Mobile has announced its latest sustainability initiative, a commitment to reach net-zero emissions across its entire carbon footprint by 2040. The operator has also joined The Climate Pledge, a community of organizations working together to combat global carbon emissions.    T-Mobile is the first wireless company in the United States to set a net-zero objective that has been certified by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) using its Net-Zero Standard. The target includes direct and indirect emissions from T-Mobile’s operations and facilities, purchased electricity, and all remaining indirect scope 3 emissions, such as those produced by suppliers, customer device usage, materials, employee travel and other factors, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the company’s total carbon footprint.   The Climate Pledge, launched in 2019 by Amazon and Global Optimism, is a pledge to reach net-zero emissions 10 years before the date targeted by the Paris Agreement. T-Mobile’s data breach affected 37 million customers A major data breach impacting 37 million T-Mobile users has been revealed. The hack, which was discovered on January 5th, is thought to have started on November 25th, 2022. An application programming interface (API) was taken advantage of by a hacker to attain unauthorized access to client data. The breach allowed access to names, billing addresses, emails, phone numbers, dates of birth and T-Mobile account numbers, but did not reveal payment card information, social security, tax, driver’s license, or other government-issued ID numbers. Mitel, a global business communications provider, has announced that it has entered into exclusive negotiations with Atos to acquire Unify, the Unified Communications and Collaboration (UCC) and Communication and Collaboration Services (CCS) businesses of the Atos group. The proposed purchase would boost Mitel’s organizational scope,  worldwide revenues and  profitability. With a combined client base of more than 75 million users in more than 100 countries and a channel network of more than 5,500 worldwide partners, Mitel and Unify would become a well-established UC leader in the Americas and Europe. As part of the proposed agreement, Mitel would acquire Unify’s voice platforms, collaboration and contact center solutions, device and endpoint portfolio, and related intellectual property. As the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, prepares revised regulations that will hold telecom companies to a higher standard, the UK operator BT is stepping up its efforts to fight scammers. In order to achieve this goal, Hiya Protect, a network-level monitoring system that can detect and reject suspicious calls, will be used by the company. This technology will be available to both fixed-line and mobile EE subscribers. According to a study done by the Hiya team, 29 percent of all phone calls in the UK are spam. 50 percent of those calls are fraudulent, making the UK the most fraudulent country in Europe. Juniper Networks, a supplier of secure, AI-driven networks, announced that Virgin Media O2, one of the UK’s major fixed and mobile service providers, has updated its IP core backbone network in conjunction with  Juniper. The upgraded network can accommodate 800G and is part of Virgin Media O2’s long-term strategy to invest in sustainable infrastructure capable of supporting continuous data growth and bandwidth needs. This investment will allow the company to quickly launch revenue-generating services while also lowering power, cooling and space usage expenses. XConnect, a provider of numbering intelligence solutions, has announced a partnership with IDT Global, the wholesale voice and SMS subsidiary of IDT Corporation.    The partnership will see IDT Global utilize XConnect’s RealNumber DNO database, which contains over 6 billion local and toll-free numbers in North America, in order to enhance its customers’ voice experience and protect them from fraudulent calls.   The RealNumber DNO contains numbers that should never be used for call origination, assisting in the prevention of telecom fraud on known inbound-only and invalid numbers. Telia Company, a Swedish telecommunications operator, has announced changes to its top management that will put sustainability at the forefront of the company’s agenda.   In March, Ola Rembe, a former executive at Ericsson, will become Senior Vice President and Head of Communications, Brand and Sustainability at Telia. This newly created position combines these different roles for the first time.   When it comes to sustainability, Telia is regarded as one of the telecom companies with more progressive thinking.
