The GSMA has released a whitepaper that specifies 10 key performance indicators (KPIs) for mobile carriers in the areas of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG).    The GSMA estimates that roughly 600 distinct ESG reporting standards are presently in use across the mobile sector. This diversity not only makes assessing the level of success on an industrial scale challenging, but it also puts a great load on operators, who often invest significant time and effort in data gathering and detailing progress, only to generate a report with little value.    The KPIs are divided into four groups, with the GSMA explaining why these divisions were made:   Environment – Reporting against environmental KPIs can aid internal decision-making, such as how to develop decarbonization policies and deploy cash to increase energy efficiency. Emissions, energy and waste reduction are the KPIs in this area.    Digital Inclusion – Tracking success against…

The successful demonstration of renewable energy sources in a 5G mobile site has been confirmed by Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson. Both companies collaborated to convert a live radio station utilizing a management system to optimize power supply and demand by leveraging solar and wind energy.   The site in Dittenheim, 120 kilometers north of Munich, has been partially powered by solar panels for over a year as part of a prior collaboration between the two enterprises. Wind turbines have now been installed as part of a new trial to increase the site’s renewable energy capability. Acting as a second renewable energy power source, the wind turbine is capable of providing up to 5kW of additional electricity. When the conditions are ideal, the facility may run entirely on renewable energy, eliminating the requirement for use of the electrical power grid.   The Ericsson Power System, which handles the two power sources…

Following an internal reorganization, Telecom Italia (TIM) has signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with the state investment bank Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) to begin talks on a possible merger of its fixed network with the state-backed company Open Fiber. This initiative is aimed at reviving a long-standing goal to establish a single fiber network company in Italy.   The notion of combining the networks of the two businesses to create a single national broadband network for Italy has been discussed for at least two years. The government-owned CDP, which has a 60% investment in Open Fiber and a 10% stake in TIM, has long advocated for such an alliance . The government has determined that establishing a unified network will allow for a faster rollout of fiber technology, avoiding an overbuild and maximizing the use of European recovery funding.   The decision comes as TIM CEO Pietro Labriola pushes…

Verizon drives towards its goal of net zero carbon emissions Verizon has used the proceeds from its most recent $1 billion green bond to sign a number of renewable energy purchase agreements (REPAs) in an effort to make its operations more ecologically friendly. These REPAs encompass around 910 megawatts of new renewable energy producing capacity throughout seven states in the USA, with wind turbines accounting for around 51% and solar panels for the remaining 49%. By 2025, the operator claims it will have sourced or generated renewable energy equal to 50% of its annual electricity use. T‑Mobile now runs fully on renewable energy T-Mobile was the first and only US carrier to declare an ambitious plan in 2018 to source 100% of its entire power usage from renewable energy by the end of 2021, and the company has now revealed that it has met this objective. T-Mobile created a renewable energy plan that includes eight virtual power agreements, 19 retail partnerships, one Green Direct program, and unbundled Renewable Energy Certificates that assist projects around the country to help attain the 100% target. In order to meet this goal, the corporation has  invested in sufficient wind and solar power to account for every unit of electricity utilized on an annual basis. Vodafone and Iliad are in negotiations to merge their respective businesses in Italy. Such a merger would provide advantages for both corporations in one of Europe’s most competitive markets and should be positive for the industry in general.   Discussions between the two corporations are ongoing, and both sides are actively looking for ways to connect their separate businesses together in Italy. If the merger is approved, it will create a telecommunications giant with over 36% mobile market penetration and combined sales of nearly $6.80 billion. Vodafone and The Iliad both declined to comment on the negotiations.   The talks take place as the local incumbent, Telecom Italia, continues to evaluate a $12.25 billion acquisition offer from US investor KKR aimed at taking Italy’s largest phone business private.   Industry leaders have frequently recommended the pursuit of four-to-three telecom mergers, which may generate cost synergies and boost margins by reducing…
