Ericsson accelerates 5G mid-band rollouts

The Swedish multinational networking and telecommunications company Ericsson has introduced three new radios in its enterprise-level Massive MIMO portfolio, and bolstered their RAN Compute portfolio with six RAN Compute products to accelerate the 5G mid-band release and expand next-generation mobile technology. Ericsson stated that the three new radios and six new RAN Compute products will enable operators to make better use of the full spectrum of mid-band, that is around 3.5 GHz. The products are powered by Ericsson Silicon, the company’s system on a chip (SoC), which provides advanced processing capabilities for the rapid development of energy-efficient, high performance networks and ensures greater security. Most phones today allow users to see the calling party’s phone number before they answer. This feature is called Caller ID or Calling Line Identity (CLI). It lets people know who is calling and decide whether they want to answer the call or not. However, callers and criminals can purposely change the Caller ID so that the incoming call appears to originate from a trusted entity. This disingenuous practice is better known as spoofing. Unfortunately, there are more and more cases where callers and criminals purposefully change the caller ID in order to commit fraud. What is Caller ID spoofing? FCC establishes Emergency Broadband Benefit program The FCC has recently held an open meeting in order to discuss its next priorities. One of the most important matters discussed was the new Emergency Broadband Benefit program, which Congress has instructed the FCC to initiate. As part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, Congress has allocated $3.2 billion for the program. Broadband providers participating in the program will be able to offer discounts of up to $50 per month for Internet services and up to $75 per month for those services on tribal lands. SK Telecom to work on AI solution for video analysis

SK Telecom, the top mobile operator in South Korea, has teamed up with its security subsidiary ADT Caps Co. and local video management solutions company Innodep Inc. to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) solution to meet the growing demand for efficient and advanced video analysis services. Under the agreement, the trio will develop services to effectively manage video surveillance systems in the private and public sectors of the growing local market. The ultimate goal of the partnership is to create real-time security services for the public and industry, while addressing existing defects in the video analysis systems, such as false alarms. As the deployment of CCTV in the public and private sectors is expanding rather swiftly to enhance safety and security, SKT said the solution will increase cost-effectiveness and accuracy by optimizing its AI chip and algorithms. 1&1 Drillisch signs a deal with Telefonica Deutschland

The independent German telecommunications company 1&1 Drillisch has announced that it has accepted Telefonica Deutschland’s improved national roaming offer. Drillisch said that if a roaming agreement were to be reached with Telefonica, it would retrospectively add $41 million to its 2020 earnings, which it would book in its 2021 fiscal year. Telefonica Deutschland and 1&1 Drillisch have agreed on the details of a new national roaming agreement after lengthy pricing disputes. Both sides claimed a positive result after the European Commission (EC) helped reach a compromise. The companies are expanding their long-term partnership by transforming the current MBA MVNO contract into a National Roaming Agreement (NRA) under the 2014 Telefónica Deutschland and E-Plus merger remedy framework. Google Cloud has announced a new 10-year strategic partnership with the Canadian telecommunications company Telus. The two companies plan to work together on developing new services and products for several key industries, including healthcare, agriculture, security and connected homes. Through this partnership, Telus will accelerate the adoption of its public cloud on the Google Cloud enterprise platform to ensure greater interoperability across its IT backbone and network infrastructure. Vodafone and Nokia test 100G PON tech Nokia’s new technology has been tested for the first time by Vodafone in Germany. The prototype used a single 25G laser and DSP technology developed at Nokia Bell Labs to create the single wavelength 100G PON transmission. Gavin Young, Head of Vodafone’s Fixed Access Center of Excellence, said the 100G PON is 40 times the capacity of today’s GPON networks and 10 times the capacity of the XGS-GPON. Telefónica and IBM announce Cloud Garden 2.0

Telecommunications giant Telefónica has expanded its long-standing technology partnership with IBM and announced the release of Cloud Garden 2.0, the next step in Telefonica’s cloud services platform to accelerate application modernization. Cloud Garden 2.0 is supported on IBM Cloud Pak and Red Hat OpenShift. The first iteration of Cloud Garden, launched in 2019, was originally based on IBM Cloud Private technology. However, Cloud Garden 2.0 switched to the hybrid Red Hat OpenShift cloud Kubernetes platform and the IBM Cloud Pak for Application. Telefónica customers can now run their applications on containers on premises or in the cloud environment of their choice, along with the simplification and speeding up when launching new solutions.
