Rogers apologizes for the massive service outage Rogers, a Canadian telecommunications company, experienced a widespread outage earlier this month and is now under pressure to guarantee that this does not happen again. The most damaging effect of the outage was how it disrupted crucial communications, and the Canadian government has declared that it now wants all national carriers to find a way of helping each other in such worst-case situations. Rogers has committed to investing at least CA$250 million to physically isolate its wireless and internet networks so as to add an extra layer of stability. As part of its search for new technological and research collaborations, Viasat Inc., a global leader in satellite communications, has joined the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus’s Space Cluster. Viasat is proving its willingness to play an active part in the UK’s space ecosystem by building a new office at the Harwell Campus, while also providing its expertise in space-based broadband communications to the Harwell community. Viasat to acquire Inmarsat

Viasat, a worldwide communications company, and Inmarsat, a major UK-based supplier of global mobile satellite communications services, have announced the signing of a formal agreement under which Viasat will buy Inmarsat for $7.3 billion. The merger will establish a global communications leader with increased size and breadth to link the globe more economically, safely and securely. The new organization’s complementary assets and resources will allow the launch of innovative new services in both the mobile and fixed segments, giving customers more options in broadband communications and narrowband services, such as IoT.
