Vodafone and WWF have announced a new relationship that will advance the communications company’s net-zero goal for 2040, while enhancing the circular economy through the collecting and recycling of smartphones. The program is a component of Vodafone’s three-year alliance with WWF, with initiatives being focused on assisting customers to make more environmentally friendly decisions.   The “One million phones for the planet” campaign went live on November 22nd, 2022 in support of Vodafone’s circularity and net-zero goals. The new project contributes to Vodafone’s goal of reusing, reselling or recycling 100% of its network waste. Additionally, it will accelerate progress toward the company’s flagship net-zero goal.   Customers in Europe and Africa will be encouraged to trade in their outdated mobile devices for repair, refurbishment or recycling. French telecoms to reduce their energy use Orange has proposed numerous energy-saving measures in order to address the current energy crisis that is expected to strike Europe this winter. Orange has announced that it will reduce its immediate power use by 5 to 10% for one hour every day. Altice will also assess its mobile network settings and implement power consumption cutbacks based on system traffic. The telecom provider will also phase out less energy-efficient equipment and limit its use of air conditioning when feasible in its data centers. NTT DOCOMO and NEC Corporation have completed a test to evaluate the energy efficiency and performance of AWS Graviton2 processors across major parts of the 5G core network (5GC).   The testing indicated a 72% decrease in power usage when compared to existing x86 processors while utilizing NEC’s 5GC software running on AWS Graviton2. Starlink experienced a worldwide outage On August 30, the Starlink broadband satellite service experienced a three-hour disruption before returning to operation. Users in the United States, New Zealand, Mexico, and the Netherlands rushed to Twitter and Reddit to complain about service failures and interruptions. The satellite company made no comments on the reason for the outage and service delays. Singtel has announced an additional US$100 million investment in Singtel Innov8, its corporate venture arm, in order to cultivate businesses with technology matched with the telco’s own priorities. The funds will also diversify their investments across regional and global markets.   The most recent cash infusion brings the Singapore carrier’s total investment in Innov8, which was founded in 2010, to $350 million. According to a statement released by Singtel on Tuesday, the VC arm has since invested in more than 95 companies, and has enjoyed 35 exits, four of which were unicorns.   Innov8 made investments in companies that match the group’s commercial interests, which include 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), sustainability, cybersecurity, the digital economy, and other cutting-edge technologies. Ericsson to be the sole RAN vendor for T-Mobile Netherlands T-Mobile Netherlands has appointed Ericsson as a sole supplier for the renewal of its 5G network. Soren Abildgaard, CEO of T-Mobile Netherlands, stated, “I am confident that with the support of Ericsson we will continue to offer our customers the best mobile telecom experience. The successful demonstration of renewable energy sources in a 5G mobile site has been confirmed by Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson. Both companies collaborated to convert a live radio station utilizing a management system to optimize power supply and demand by leveraging solar and wind energy.   The site in Dittenheim, 120 kilometers north of Munich, has been partially powered by solar panels for over a year as part of a prior collaboration between the two enterprises. Wind turbines have now been installed as part of a new trial to increase the site’s renewable energy capability. Acting as a second renewable energy power source, the wind turbine is capable of providing up to 5kW of additional electricity.
