Finnish company Nokia has extended its partnership with Taiwan Mobile for another year. This agreement aims to enhance the performance and capacity of Taiwan Mobile’s 5G network and improve its 4G/LTE network. The upgrade is expected to enhance customer experiences for Taiwan Mobile’s 10 million users.

The new contract also follows the merger of Taiwan Mobile and Taiwan Star last year. It sets the stage for Taiwan Mobile’s journey into the 5G-Advanced era. Under this agreement, Nokia will deliver components from its 5G AirScale portfolio to Taiwan for the first time. This equipment includes next-generation AirScale baseband solutions and advanced radios, all powered by its ReefShark System-on-Chip technology.

This project will also modernize thousands of existing LTE sites, improving energy efficiency and supporting Taiwan Mobile’s sustainability goals. Using Nokia’s IPAA+ solution, Taiwan Mobile can add antennas in tight urban spaces, a significant benefit given Taiwan’s densely populated areas. Furthermore, Nokia’s carrier aggregation technology will be implemented, enabling the network to combine radio spectrum. This will lead to faster data rates and better capacity for customers.

Previously, Nokia played a significant role in deploying Taiwan Mobile’s 5G network, establishing over 3,000 new cell sites. Jamie Lin, President at Taiwan Mobile, emphasized, “This expanded partnership with Nokia marks a significant step forward in our commitment to providing our 10 million customers with the best possible 5G experience.”

The partnership benefits both urban and rural customers, ensuring superior connectivity through the 5G infrastructure. Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, expressed enthusiasm about modernizing Taiwan Mobile’s networks, emphasizing the energy-efficient AirScale portfolio’s role in reducing environmental impact and aligning with the operator’s sustainability ambitions.
