T-Mobile US has set a new benchmark in 5G uplink speeds with their standalone network, using the innovative New Radio Dual Connectivity (5G DC) feature. This groundbreaking achievement increased uplink throughput and capacity, hitting peak speeds of 2.2 Gbps. With 5G DC, T-Mobile aggregated 2.5 GHz and mmWave spectrum, greatly boosting uplink performance.

Traditionally, uplink capabilities have not been the primary focus in network metrics. However, with demanding activities like live streaming, gaming, and augmented reality on the rise, faster upload speeds are becoming essential. The test at SoFi Stadium in Southern California utilized T-Mobile’s 5G SA production network, Ericsson’s equipment, and a Qualcomm-designed test device.

Ulf Ewaldsson, Technology President at T-Mobile US, remarked, “With 5G DC, T-Mobile is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to create better experiences in the places that matter most to our customers.” This deployment highlights T-Mobile’s commitment to enhancing user experiences in high-demand areas.

While download speeds have been the traditional gold standard in network performance, these developments in uplink capabilities are changing the narrative. As Marten Lerner from Ericsson noted, high uplink speeds are crucial for delivering immersive experiences. This reflects one of their goals with Ericsson 5G Advanced, aimed at elevating user engagement through better network performance.

Collaborations with industry pioneers further drive this innovation. Sunil Patil of Qualcomm emphasized the importance of partnerships in advancing 5G capabilities, stating, “We will continue our close collaboration with global innovators like T-Mobile and Ericsson to push the boundaries and unlock the full potential of 5G.”

Apart from technological advancements, T-Mobile is also expanding its network capacity. Earlier in the year, the company announced additional enhancements to its 5G network with the activation of the 2.5 GHz spectrum acquired through FCC’s Auction 108. This expansion aims to extend Ultra Capacity 5G coverage across new communities, reflecting T-Mobile’s extensive reach, which now spans more than 330 million people across two million square miles.
