Ericsson and Vietnamese tech leader FPT have entered into a partnership aimed at driving the deployment of 5G technology and advancing innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation in Vietnam. This collaboration seeks to establish a foundation for elevating 5G across various sectors, thus promoting digital innovations. The partnership initially targets key areas like healthcare monitoring, enhanced manufacturing processes, and augmented and virtual reality for retail.

By leveraging 5G capabilities, FPT plans to boost its technological prowess in AI and create advanced AI-driven solutions. The agreement mandates FPT and Ericsson to develop new use cases for consumers and businesses, with Vietnam as the starting point. Rita Mokbel, President and CEO of Ericsson Vietnam, stated, “We are eager to work together to drive the transformation of digital infrastructure across major sectors. Through this partnership, we aim to unleash the transformative power of 5G, fostering innovation, boosting productivity, and advancing Vietnam’s journey toward becoming a digital economy.”

The partnership comes as Ericsson cements its role in the Vietnamese telecom market. Viettel, a local operator, recently reported awarding the majority of its nationwide 5G radio access network deployment to Ericsson. The Swedish vendor’s 5G products will soon be deployed across numerous Vietnamese provinces, with the contract commencing immediately. This deployment will extend to central locales, including Hanoi. In tandem, the modernization of Viettel’s 5G network, alongside its 4G network in certain areas, forms a crucial part of this extended partnership.

The agreement signals a move towards continual spectrum re-farming for New Radio (NR), with plans for utilizing the 2.6GHz spectrum for both 4G and 5G Non-standalone (NSA) and paving the way for future 5G Standalone (SA) deployment. Furthermore, Ericsson and Viettel signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to propel 5G adoption in Vietnam. This MoU outlines collaboration to develop innovative 5G use cases and create a robust developer ecosystem in the country, powering reliable applications with 5G.
