New research by Telehouse has shed light on a considerable lack of awareness among UK consumers regarding data centres, despite their increasing importance in powering digital services. According to the study, 51% of Brits have never encountered the term “data centre,” and a further 67% confessed to having no inkling of what a data centre is or its functions.
The survey polled over 2,000 UK consumers, revealing a significant gap in public comprehension. Though 48% of respondents acknowledge data centres’ positive impact on digital services like video streaming and online shopping, many remain oblivious to the scale of operations housed within these facilities. A surprising 43% are unaware of the volume of people, applications, and data that data centres support.
The study also highlights conflicting public perceptions of data centres’ value, especially given the rise in remote work. While 59% of respondents recognize data centres as crucial to remote work, 19% remain uncertain about their role, and 15% consider them of little significance.
In a bid to enhance public understanding, Telehouse has launched an educational initiative featuring ‘DC’, a character who demystifies data centres through an engaging video. Mark Pestridge, Executive Vice President and General Manager at Telehouse Europe, commented, “We realize there’s a significant knowledge gap regarding data centres and their impact on digital lives. By introducing ‘DC,’ we hope to educate people about the critical work done in data centres and inspire our future generations to consider careers in this field.”
