Korean telecom giant SK Telecom has become a founding member of the MIT Generative AI Impact Consortium. This collaboration between industry and academia aims to explore the societal and industrial impacts of generative AI technologies. The partnership seeks to offer practical guidance to the AI industry, emphasizing AI’s transformative role in various sectors.
The consortium includes top global entities, such as OpenAI, The Coca-Cola Company, and Tata Group. These members will collaboratively identify significant projects to initiate full-scale research this year. SK Telecom intends to share its expertise and explore potential partnership opportunities with fellow consortium members. The goal is to achieve concrete outcomes in ICT, semiconductors, and energy sectors, leveraging the capabilities of its SK AI R&D Center.
MIT’s commitment to AI-driven industrial changes has been evident, with faculty members publishing 25 papers in 2024 alone. Highlighting the consortium’s vision, MIT School of Engineering’s Dean, Anantha Chandrakasan, stated that their focus is on breaking barriers and merging disciplines to maximize generative AI’s benefits globally.
For SK Telecom, this collaboration is an opportunity to harness AI innovations not just in generative AI, but also in newer domains such as physical AI, manufacturing, and biotechnology. According to SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang, the company aims to drive AI innovation across various industries by leveraging SK Group’s AI capabilities through global partnerships.
