Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, in partnership with Huawei, has completed a significant core network consolidation project in Jakarta. The initiative aims to enhance Indosat’s mobile communication technologies across Indonesia, impacting over 100 million users and 26 core locations. The project, completed in just 14 months, stands out for its rapid execution.

This consolidation promises substantial benefits for users, particularly those in rural and remote regions. For instance, residents of Kalimantan will see a 15% increase in average downlink speed and an 11% reduction in round-trip time for Facebook usage. A third-party report also suggests that users in Central Java will experience improved internet performance for gaming and live video streaming.

Desmond Cheung, Director and Chief Technology Officer of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, emphasized the project’s importance: “We’re humbled to create another benchmark for the telecommunications industry. The core network consolidation project is a testament to our commitment to delivering a world-class digital experience to our customers.”

George Gao, President of Huawei Cloud Core Network Product Line, added: “Thanks to our close and in-depth cooperation, we are very pleased to witness a great achievement in completing such a large-scale and complex network consolidation in a short period of time. Huawei will continuously support Indosat to enhance network connectivity, accelerate service innovation, and create industry value in digital transformation.”

The project entailed significant challenges. Both Indosat and Huawei teams engaged in comprehensive analyses and reviews to determine optimal solutions, adopting a first-time-right approach. They employed leading telco cloud-native technology, utilizing bare metal containers and a dual-engine container solution. This technology supports the large-scale commercial use of 5G core networks and integrates virtual machines and containers within a unified infrastructure platform. This approach enables Indosat to roll out services more quickly and reduce time-to-market.

As digital technologies advance, Indosat’s requirements for network intelligence and user experience have increased. The partnership with Huawei facilitated deploying a future-ready core network capable of adapting to the 5G-A intelligent and hyper-distributed architecture. This prepares the network for more diversified 5G features and services for consumer and business users.
