Nokia and Latvian telecom operator LMT have launched a strategic partnership to develop a 5G tactical communications system for the Baltic region. This collaboration integrates Nokia’s 5G radio technology with LMT’s defense solutions to create a secure, high-capacity communication system tailored for defense operations in the Baltics.

The system is designed to enhance situational awareness, enable secure interoperability among military units and coalition forces, and allow real-time data exchange between unmanned vehicles, sensors, and troops. Juris Binde, President of LMT, emphasized the importance of boosting security and resilience for national and allied forces.

Giuseppe Targia, head of Space and Defense at Nokia, highlighted how 5G connectivity provides high-speed, low-latency, and reliable communications that improve battlefield operations, accelerate decision-making, and ensure seamless communication in defense environments.

Building on a long-standing collaboration, Nokia and LMT have already partnered on Latvia’s mobile networks and 5G military applications, including Europe’s first 5G military testbed at the Ādaži base, supporting NATO defense strategies.

Earlier this year, Nokia delivered its Banshee portable 5G tactical network to the US Marine Corps, offering secure, high-speed communication adaptable for rapid deployment in challenging conditions.

In parallel, Nokia partnered with KDDI Research to pioneer 6G networks, focusing on energy-efficient designs and distributed core networks to advance next-generation connectivity. Industry experts, including Peter Vetter from Bell Labs, stress that collaboration is key to achieving efficient, intelligent, and innovative 6G and defense communications solutions.

Together, these initiatives showcase how Nokia and LMT are driving technological advancements in 5G and 6G networks, enhancing military communications, interoperability, and national defense capabilities in the Baltic region and beyond.
