Vodafone and Arm’s Alliance: Reinventing Open RAN for 5G Era

In the latest groundbreaking development in the telecommunication industry, Vodafone has teamed up with Arm to introduce a novel chipset based on an open and adaptable platform. This groundbreaking partnership promises to develop platforms filled with Arm-based processors tailored for use by Open RAN base stations.

According to the joint communique, these platforms will boast the computational power to support the cutting-edge 5G services. They will provide an impressive overhaul in terms of energy efficiency as well. Vodafone has demonstrated its allegiance to the cause of promoting the competitive landscape of Open RAN chipsets. The telecom giant aims to provide the necessary testing and verification support for smaller firms to take active participation in their usage.

SynaXG and Ampere Computing – seasoned entities in the system and silicon industry – have been engaged to test and validate the Arm-based Open RAN silicon. Fujitsu promises to lend its expertise with the RAN software aspect. The testing of these chipsets is expected to start later this year in vendors’ labs to distinctly define the computational platform and silicon integration.

By the first quarter of 2024, these novel chipsets will undergo trials at Vodafone’s R&D center in Málaga and at its Newbury office in the UK.

This prolific collaboration will extend its benefits to the entire industry, shifting the paradigm of communication networks into an open-source platform for innovation. As the Network Architecture Director of Vodafone, Santiago Tenorio stated, “Vodafone’s Open RAN leadership, coupled with the power efficiency of the Arm-based architecture, will widen the chip and software ecosystem.”

This project gives us a glimpse into the future of Open RAN development and its potential energy efficiency. Such feats will be instrumental for Vodafone in realizing its net-zero objectives.

In an additional update, Vodafone confirmed its collaboration with Orange and Nokia for developing a new 4G call experience based on Open RAN in Romania, and a commercial 5G Open RAN pilot in Italy respectively.

It’s no secret the telecom industry is awash with numerous pilots and trials that may get lost in the whirlwind of activities. Vodafone’s recent commitment to these cutting-edge changes signals the company’s steadfast advocacy for Open RAN in general. Significant strides are being made as Vodafone plans to integrate the technology into its upcoming 100,000-site tender.
