Global satellite communications leader Viasat, Inc. has joined forces with Safran Data Systems to introduce InRange, a revolutionary system ensuring continuous telemetry data relay for launch vehicles in flight. This collaboration aims to liberate launch providers and spaceports from ground network dependencies during missions.
Utilizing Viasat’s expansive L-band satellite fleet, powered by the acquisition of Inmarsat in May, InRange guarantees real-time telemetry data for launch missions. By leveraging space-based communications, the system enables mission controllers to monitor performance beyond the line of sight, eliminating the necessity for ground-based communication infrastructure. This global satellite communications network mitigates potential ‘blackout zones’ as launch vehicles traverse areas lacking Earth-based connectivity.
Safran Data Systems, under the Memorandum of Understanding, will contribute telemetry antennas, onboard transmitters, and Cortex modems to support InRange’s deployment worldwide. The collaboration also explores commercial models facilitating launchers’ seamless acquisition and utilization of the InRange system. This follows a recent milestone for InRange, securing a joint contract with the European Space Agency to test the system on Skyrora’s sub-orbital Skylark L launch vehicle in the coming year.
Gary Lay, Vice President of Viasat’s Strategic Programmes, highlighted the significance of global connectivity, stating, “Accurate telemetry is a critical part of any launch mission, so global connectivity that provides accurate, real-time data could be game-changing as we continue to see rapid growth.”
“InRange is designed to give launch operators greater flexibility and reliability for their launch telemetry,” Lay added. The partnership with Safran aims to expedite the service’s market introduction and establish it as an indispensable tool for mission success.
Jean-Marie Bétermier, Safran Electronics & Defense Space Director, emphasized Safran’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of launch operators. Bétermier expressed pride in the progress made with InRange, recognizing it as a testament to Safran’s expertise in advanced telemetry, ensuring real-time and continuous data delivery regardless of the launch vehicle’s position.
