At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, BT’s Division X unveiled a significant advancement in their technology offerings, introducing a multi-million-pound investment in a narrowband Internet of Things (NB IoT) network. This move is poised to revolutionize the IoT landscape across various sectors, promising a new era of smart cities and advanced agriculture. Chris Keone, the Managing Director of Division X, shared insights into how this technology is setting the stage for futuristic urban environments and industry transformations.

The newly launched NB IoT network is designed to facilitate widespread IoT application, enabling connections and automations previously unattainable due to the need for manual control. This innovation is expected to accelerate the development of smart cities, enhancing energy management and distribution through meticulous monitoring.

Keone explained the strategic deployment of the NB IoT network across the UK, leveraging the extensive coverage of the EE network to reach 97% of the population. This initiative marks a significant milestone for BT, transitioning from exploratory phases to providing a tangible service that addresses immediate and future customer needs. The technology is specifically aimed at stationary applications, such as utilities and urban infrastructure, while also exploring other IoT capabilities to cater to dynamic requirements like autonomous vehicles.

Despite the long-standing vision of hyper-connected urban spaces, the integration of technologies like NB IoT is crucial for realizing these concepts beyond niche applications. Keone emphasized the ongoing journey toward maturity in various sectors, highlighting the importance of foundational infrastructure and direct engagement with customers to identify and address specific challenges.

The conversation at MWC 2024 also touched on the broader technological landscape, noting the pervasive theme of artificial intelligence (AI) and its rapid evolution. Keone stressed the importance of transforming AI concepts into practical solutions, reflecting Division X’s commitment to collaborative innovation with customers to create impactful and meaningful advancements.

As BT’s Division X continues to lead the charge in integrating cutting-edge technologies, the future of smart cities and IoT-enabled industries looks promising, heralding a new era of connectivity and efficiency.
