The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has raised alarms regarding the possibility of a collusion among a handful of American tech giants, aiming to manipulate the AI market in their favor. The focus of their worry centers on the control exerted by these companies over the development and commercialization of foundation models (FMs), with Open AI’s GPT being a prominent example.
In an investigative effort, the CMA has identified a complex network of over 90 partnerships and strategic investments involving major players such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Nvidia. They fear that this intricate web could be exploited to erect formidable barriers, hindering the entry of other entities into the FM market.
This scrutiny follows preliminary work conducted last year, initially aimed at establishing regulatory guidelines for AI. However, it has unveiled the extent of collaboration among ostensibly competitive companies. Concurrently, the CMA is pursuing a separate investigation into the UK cloud market, focusing on many of the same industry giants.
Sarah Cardell, CEO of the CMA, expressed growing apprehension, emphasizing the challenge of harnessing AI’s potential while safeguarding against market manipulation and unintended consequences. Cardell articulated these concerns during a speech in the US, coinciding with discussions among policymakers and regulators on the transformative power and control exerted by tech behemoths.
US officials have also echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for international collaboration in addressing emerging threats posed by AI dominance. Google and Microsoft, among the scrutinized companies, hold significant influence across various sectors, amplifying regulatory concerns.
