Apple is venturing into the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) processing chips for data centers, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. This move positions Apple in direct competition with industry peers like Google and Amazon, which have already heavily invested in AI chip technology.
Internally dubbed “Project ACDC,” Apple’s initiative focuses on developing specialized AI chips tailored specifically for data center applications. These chips are intended to boost AI workloads, thereby improving overall performance and efficiency.
By partnering with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Apple aims to design and optimize these chips to seamlessly integrate with its software ecosystem. This strategy allows Apple to fine-tune hardware to complement its software offerings.
Although the ACDC project has reportedly been underway for several years, specific details regarding product release timelines remain undisclosed.
Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed optimism about the company’s AI endeavors during a recent interview with Reuters. Cook highlighted Apple’s strong belief in the transformative potential of AI, emphasizing the company’s unique blend of hardware, software, and services integration, including its proprietary Apple silicon and neural engines, as well as its unwavering commitment to privacy.
Moreover, Apple has initiated discussions with Google and OpenAI to integrate advanced AI capabilities into iOS 18. This could involve licensing OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini to enhance AI functionalities within the iOS ecosystem. The choice of partner has yet to be confirmed by Apple.
