Verizon has entered into a $100 million agreement with AST SpaceMobile to extend satellite coverage across the United States. This partnership aims to achieve 100% geographical coverage by utilizing the 850 MHz spectrum, particularly in areas lacking traditional terrestrial service.
The collaboration promises to combine Verizon’s existing mobile network with AST SpaceMobile’s low Earth orbit satellites, ensuring continuous connectivity for customers throughout the continental US. This innovative approach will allow users to maintain service even in remote locations where land-based infrastructure falls short.
Abel Avellan, CEO of AST SpaceMobile, emphasized the transformative impact of this deal, stating that it targets complete coverage of the US using premium spectrum. He noted that the partnership would effectively eliminate connectivity dead zones, bringing reliable communication to isolated regions.
Verizon’s Srini Kalapala highlighted the company’s strategic use of its spectrum assets, indicating that this deal will leverage both terrestrial and satellite networks. The goal is to enhance service quality and provide vital connectivity in remote parts of the country.
AST SpaceMobile already collaborates with over 45 mobile network operators worldwide, serving more than 2.8 billion subscribers. Recently, the company also finalized a deal with AT&T to offer satellite direct-to-phone services, with the first commercial satellites scheduled for launch this summer. This development follows significant funding from AT&T, Google, and Vodafone, totaling over $200 million to support the satellite technology.
Through these strategic partnerships, AST SpaceMobile and Verizon are poised to revolutionize mobile connectivity, ensuring seamless coverage across the United States and paving the way for future advancements in satellite communication technology.
