T-Mobile Introduces Backup Internet Service Amid Network Outages

T-Mobile US has launched a new backup fixed-wireless access (FWA) service called Home Internet Backup in response to frequent network outages and an anticipated severe hurricane season. This new service is an entry-level FWA subscription priced at $30 per month, which includes a bundled home gateway. It is designed to be a cost-effective alternative to T-Mobile’s existing Home Internet package, offering a $20 discount.

Targeting fixed broadband customers, Home Internet Backup is intended for use when fiber or cable connections fail. Citing CivicScience data, T-Mobile highlighted that nearly 20 percent of US internet users face outages “at least a few times per month.” During such disruptions, customers can switch to Home Internet Backup to continue their online activities without interruption. However, to prevent it from being used as a primary internet connection, the service has a monthly data cap of 130 GB.

T-Mobile has aggressively promoted FWA, accumulating around 5 million subscribers, and Home Internet Backup could further expand its customer base by attracting fixed broadband users who might eventually switch to T-Mobile’s primary services.

Additionally, T-Mobile’s new service might appeal to AT&T customers who have experienced several network issues this year. Recently, AT&T acknowledged a problem preventing some customers from making calls to another network, presumed to be Verizon, though it stated this was not a nationwide issue. Nonetheless, such incidents have damaged AT&T’s reputation and customer loyalty.

As the US braces for an “above-normal” Atlantic hurricane season, as predicted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Home Internet Backup could provide a critical communication link during emergencies, assuming there is still electricity. T-Mobile has enhanced its network resilience by increasing its backup power capabilities and deploying additional backup generators and base station-equipped trucks to ensure continued service during disasters.

While these measures are precautionary, T-Mobile’s proactive approach aims to position itself as a reliable network provider, especially at a time when competitors face technical difficulties.
