Infinera has achieved a significant milestone in advancing 5G mobile broadband technology through successful multi-vendor interoperability testing of its XR optics. The testing, conducted in collaboration with DZS and Calnex at the European Open Test & Integration Center in Torino by TIM, marks a pivotal step towards simplifying and cost-reducing 5G network deployments.

The demonstration focused on point-to-multipoint optical transmission using coherent open XR optics, designed to streamline the transport of high-capacity xHaul applications crucial for 5G networks. By integrating XR-based coherent pluggable optics into third-party hosts, the testing showcased enhanced synchronization and timing distribution capabilities essential for efficient fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul scenarios.

Ron Johnson, SVP and General Manager of Optical Subsystems at Infinera, emphasized the transformative potential of XR optics in aligning with 5G network traffic demands. “Our collaboration with industry leaders such as TIM underscores the pivotal role of XR optics innovation in reshaping the economics of 5G transport,” Johnson stated.

Key equipment utilized in the interoperable xHaul testing included Infinera’s ICE-X intelligent coherent pluggables, alongside DZS Saber 2200 and Calnex Paragon-NEO systems. This collaborative effort, supported in part by the EU project ALLEGRO, GA No. 101092766, aims to deliver substantial cost savings by reducing the number of optical transceivers required, thereby lowering total cost of ownership for mobile operators.

The successful testing not only validates the technical viability of XR optics but also positions the technology to facilitate the future transition to 6G networks efficiently. With growing bandwidth demands and evolving network architectures, innovations like XR optics are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of mobile broadband networks.

This milestone underscores Infinera’s commitment to driving optical networking advancements that empower mobile operators to meet the evolving demands of 5G and beyond, setting a precedent for enhanced network efficiency and performance.
