Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region. This new infrastructure will significantly benefit developers, startups, entrepreneurs, enterprises, government bodies, educational institutions, and non-profits. By hosting applications closer to home, these organizations can serve end users more effectively from Malaysian data centers.
AWS plans to invest around $6.2 billion in Malaysia by 2038. They estimate that this investment will contribute roughly $12.1 billion to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and support over 3,500 full-time equivalent jobs annually in various external businesses.
Tengku Zafrul, Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade & Industry (MITI), explained, “The launch of an AWS infrastructure Region in Malaysia provides access to new and emerging technology for Malaysian entities and businesses of all sizes, boosting our country’s capabilities for digital innovation.” This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030, aiming to foster a highly skilled, innovative, and sustainable economy.
Prasad Kalyanaraman, VP of infrastructure services at AWS, added, “The new AWS Region in Malaysia enables organizations across Asia Pacific to unlock the full potential of the world’s most extensive and reliable cloud, helping customers deploy advanced applications with a broad set of AWS technologies like AI and ML.”
The AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region consists of three availability zones, strategically separated to ensure business continuity and low latency for high availability applications. Each zone has its own power, cooling, and physical security, and they are interconnected through redundant, ultra-low-latency networks.
With this new launch, AWS now boasts 108 availability zones across 34 geographic regions worldwide, with upcoming plans for 18 more availability zones and six additional regions in Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
AWS has also confirmed its new AWS Asia Pacific (Bangkok) Region, set to go live by early 2025. This Thai region will complement existing infrastructure, such as Amazon CloudFront edge locations, AWS Outposts, and Local Zones. Being the fourth AWS Region in ASEAN after Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, it will enable secure data storage for customers with data residency preferences.
