Nokia has significantly expanded its research and development (R&D) facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, making it one of the largest hubs globally for the company’s fixed networks division. This move is aimed at enhancing Nokia’s portfolio in fiber, Wi-Fi, and fixed wireless technologies.
The expanded R&D center will focus on advancing cutting-edge technologies, including 10G, 25G, 50G, and 100G Passive Optical Networks (PON), Fixed Wireless Access, Wi-Fi solutions, and multi-dwelling unit (MDU) technology. The facility will also work on access network innovations and home network controllers, further solidifying its role in Nokia’s global operations.
To formalize the expansion, Nokia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guidance Tamil Nadu. As part of this agreement, the Tamil Nadu government will provide necessary infrastructure and policy support to Nokia, highlighting Chennai’s growing importance as a global hub for technological innovation.
Dr. TRB Rajaa, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, expressed pride in hosting Nokia’s largest fixed network lab. He credited initiatives by Chief Minister Thiru. MK Stalin, including the Tamil Nadu R&D Policy 2022, for attracting such high-profile investments, which are expected to create valuable employment opportunities in the region.
Vimalkumar Kothandaraman, Nokia’s Head of Fixed Networks for the Asia Pacific, emphasized that the Chennai R&D facility is crucial to the company’s fixed networks strategy. He noted that this investment underscores Nokia’s commitment to advancing technology both in India and globally, while also taking advantage of the local talent pool.
