BT Group has made a bold move by placing the UK’s biggest electric vehicle (EV) order. This substantial order of 3,500 new EVs reflects the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions. Currently holding the position as the operator of the second-largest commercial fleet in the UK, BT’s fleet boasts over 27,000 vehicles. The company aims to operate close to 8,000 electric vehicles by 2026 as part of its net-zero emissions target for March 2031. Plans to further cut emissions include extending this goal to its supply chain and customer emissions by 2041.

So far, BT Group has already been making strides towards a sustainable future. They’ve reduced their carbon emissions intensity by an impressive 61% since 2017. BT’s focus isn’t solely on vehicles; they’re also in the process of upgrading their network infrastructure. The transition to more energy-efficient full fibre, 4G, and 5G networks is well underway, phasing out older systems.

Simon Lowth, BT Group’s CFO, emphasized their commitment: “By integrating yet more electric vehicles into our operations, we are taking another significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and supporting the UK’s transition to a greener future.” He expressed confidence that these modern vehicles will enable BT’s engineers to efficiently connect customers to the next generation of networks.

The EVs, from suppliers such as Ford, Stellantis, Toyota, and Renault, will be delivered over the next two years. BT’s order illustrates a substantial investment in sustainability as the UK aims for a greener future.
