Freshwave and Robotarium Partner to Boost Agritech Innovation

Freshwave‘s strategic partnership with the National Robotarium aims at deploying advanced agritech robots. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, focuses on deploying a portable 5G private network at the Edinburgh facility. The network will empower robots and AI applications, enhancing robotics testing and pushing innovation in the agricultural technology sector.

A notable use case involves ‘Spot’, a four-legged wireless robot. This robot utilizes the 5G network to stream live video, generate 3D maps, and conduct infrared scans in real-time supporting agricultural tasks. By processing data effectively, this technology seeks to boost productivity and sustainability in farming practices.

The introduction of portable 5G networks is crucial in rural areas with limited traditional broadband access. These networks provide fast and reliable internet, essential for real-time data analysis, such as crop monitoring or equipment adjustments. Notably, their portability fits well into seasonal or mobile farming operations where permanent infrastructure is not practical.

“Robots have the potential to transform the agricultural sector, similar to the way equipment such as tractors did so many years ago, but they need the right networks to power this data-driven approach,” commented Steve Maclaren, COO at the National Robotarium, in a press release.

This development signifies the beginning of exciting new applications. The potential to have several robots in the field performing various tasks like weed removal and nutrient analysis is emerging. This creates a ‘co-bot’ workforce, where human and robot collaboration leads to unprecedented achievements in agritech.
