President Donald Trump has put forward Olivia Trusty for a position as a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) commissioner. Trusty, currently serving as policy director of the U.S. Senate Committee on Science, Commerce, and Transportation, was nominated by Trump’s announcement on Truth Social.
Trump expressed confidence in Trusty’s ability to stimulate economic growth and promote innovation. He stated, “She has fought tirelessly to grow the economy, empower innovation, and reignite the American Dream.” Trump also emphasized Trusty’s potential to partner with Brendan Carr, the newly appointed FCC Chairman, to streamline regulations and protect free speech. The aim is to ensure every American accesses affordable, high-speed internet.
Trusty’s academic credentials include education from Georgetown University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. However, her nomination awaits approval by the Senate, which may shape her future role within the FCC.
In response, the remaining Democratic commissioners at the FCC expressed support. Commissioner Ana M. Gomez praised Trusty’s background, stating, “She is widely respected, a consummate professional, and has a strong background on communications policy.” Similarly, Geoffrey Starks acknowledged her effective policy-making skills, which would benefit the agency and the public.
As this unfolds, Jessica Rosenworcel, the former FCC chair, has stepped down, making way for Carr’s leadership. Brendan Carr now officially leads the FCC, appointed by Trump on Inauguration Day.
