Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) continues to enhance Birmingham’s mobile network by deploying more 4G small cells in collaboration with Ontix. This effort aims to boost mobile capacity, especially in crowded areas like the city center.

Small cells are compact base stations that augment existing network infrastructure. Due to their size, they are typically installed on street furniture like lamp posts. This deployment specifically targets dense areas, enhancing network performance where it’s needed most.

Ontix, a company specializing in such infrastructure deployments, works closely with local authorities and property owners. Together, they facilitate these enhancements, ensuring the installations benefit both the city and its residents.

The current project, backed by the city council and the Soho Road Business Improvement District, includes the installation of five small cells. These will be strategically positioned in high-traffic areas such as Soho Road and Handsworth.

Steven Verigotta, Director of Radio & Mobile Backhaul Delivery at VMO2, explains the impact: “Small cells are an effective way of increasing local network bandwidth and play an important role in allowing us to keep up with rising customer demand. We are proud to have delivered these new sites in Soho Road and Handsworth, which will unlock opportunities for local residents and businesses.”

With network upgrade programs across the UK, VMO2 is committed to delivering exceptional experiences. This deployment in Birmingham is part of an ongoing partnership with Ontix, which began two years ago with similar enhancements in the city center.
