Ericsson, Dell, and Red Hat are spearheading efforts to build smarter multi-vendor networks by innovating on O-RAN standards. The collaborative approach to the O2 interface aims to enhance mobile connectivity in response to growing demands. Open RAN has emerged as a key solution, prioritizing interoperable interfaces and the separation of hardware and software. These advancements support flexible multi-vendor systems.

Together, the companies have developed O2 interface definitions to connect the Service Management and Orchestration Framework with the O-Cloud Infrastructure Management. Anders Vestergren, Head of Solution Area Network Management at Ericsson, remarked on the significance of this interface: “The future of telecom networks lies in openness and interoperability… It’s essential that the industry works together.” The statement underscores the commitment to drive industry-wide standardization.

Multiple proof-of-concept projects aim to showcase the O2 interface’s practical application. Using Dell Telecom Infrastructure Blocks, Red Hat OpenShift, and Ericsson’s Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP), the collaboration sets a path for seamless integration of cloud RAN management. The O2 interface is crucial for ensuring interoperability across diverse hardware and platforms.

The O2 interface consists of two main services: the Infrastructure Management Service (IMS) for resource oversight, and the Deployment Management Service (DMS) for managing Open RAN network functions. This setup allows seamless deployment across varied environments. It represents a strategic move towards unifying multi-vendor networks, relying on open and programmable architecture.

Ericsson has made the O2 interface integral to its portfolio. In tandem with its cloud-native network functions and the Cloud Native Infrastructure Solution (CNIS), it forms a solid base for the company’s O-Cloud strategy. This setup ensures streamlined management of infrastructure-related resources following Open RAN standards.

Recent achievements also include integrating various RAN system vendors via the O1 interface. Such integration highlights the power of standardization in unifying network management across different platforms, thus simplifying complex ecosystems.

Honoré LaBourdette, VP of the Global Telco Ecosystem at Red Hat, praised the cooperation: “By proactively aligning to O-Cloud standards, this collaboration empowers CSPs to make the strongest possible strategic choices…” It emphasizes the collaborative power in optimizing network management for better performance.
