Vodafone Idea has officially launched its commercial 5G network in Mumbai, collaborating closely with Nordic equipment provider Nokia. This significant move marks the first step in rolling out 5G services in India, with Mumbai being the initial launch target. To ensure robust service, Nokia has provided advanced energy-efficient technology.
Additionally, Vodafone Idea is utilizing an AI-powered Self-Organizing Network (SON) system. This system aims to optimize network efficiency dynamically, enhancing both performance and sustainability. Significantly, the company offers unlimited 5G data on plans starting from just INR 299, approximately $3.46.
“Our focus is on introducing 5G meaningfully for our users,” stated Jagbir Singh, CTO of Vodafone Idea. Singh noted the company’s commitment to a robust 5G network using the latest technology. The aim is to create a seamless and powerful network ready for future connectivity demands.
The roll-out across India will progress in phases as stated by Vodafone Idea, which has been conducting 5G trials nationwide. The carrier plans to initiate commercial 5G services by March 2025, prioritizing 17 circles, including major areas like Delhi.
Notably, Vodafone Idea aims to extend its 4G coverage to at least 90% of India’s population by June 2025, up from the current 77%. As a strategy to prevent subscriber losses, it has raised new funds for extending 4G and launching 5G.
Reliance Jio Infocomm and Bharti Airtel already offer comprehensive 5G services and have established extensive 4G networks. Despite the competition, Vodafone Idea, as a joint venture between the UK’s Vodafone Group and India’s Aditya Birla Group, continues to prioritize expanding in 17 licensed areas for both 4G and 5G services.
Moreover, the company has been in exploratory discussions with Elon Musk’s Starlink and other satellite communication providers to potentially enhance its service quality and expand its reach. “We wish to inform you that the company, in ordinary course of business, keeps on exploring various initiatives and tie-ups,” Vodafone Idea stated in a regulatory filing. Such ventures aim to bolster their network offerings, following the lead of rivals Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio who have partnered with Starlink.
