Ericsson and SoftBank have entered into a promising collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), focusing on the advancement of next-generation telecom technologies. This partnership, set to extend towards 2030, seeks to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud RAN, Extended Reality (XR), and 6G, in an effort to bolster telecom infrastructure.
The collaboration is part of an initiative called “NextWave Tech”, which aims to accelerate the development of future networks using cutting-edge technologies and innovative business applications. With emphasis on Cloud RAN deployment, AI-driven automation, and XR connectivity, the partnership also plans to explore efficient spectrum use, specifically centimetre Wave technology, intending to enhance Japan’s stance in 6G.
A shared vision underpins this alliance: the creation of an AI-powered, cloud-based telecom infrastructure. The companies aim to boost network efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and performance, thereby shaping the future landscape of mobile connectivity. Jawad Manssour, President and Representative Director of Ericsson Japan, emphasizes the significance of this collaboration as “a significant step forward in realizing the full potential of AI-powered connectivity technologies”.
Further reinforcing the importance of this partnership, Hideyuki Tsukuda, EVP and CTO at SoftBank Corp, remarked, “Our joint efforts in areas such as 6G and AI will not only enhance the performance of our network, but also pave the way for new business opportunities and technological breakthroughs.”
