The FirstNet network has surpassed 7 million subscribers, marking a significant milestone for AT&T, the operator behind the dedicated network for first responders. This expansive reach makes FirstNet cover nearly 3 million square miles across the United States, exemplifying its extensive network footprint. Recently, AT&T expanded the network by an additional 20,000 square miles.
A notable partnership with AST SpaceMobile focuses on developing cellular Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) coverage, specifically for first responders. AT&T emphasized achieving advancements with AST, particularly in areas with challenging terrain, improving services beyond basic text messaging. “We have already successfully tested mission-critical capabilities such as push-to-talk services,” the carrier stated in a recent release.
Furthermore, high-powered user equipment, or HPUE, is improving indoor coverage. AT&T is heavily invested in in-building signal boosters, with over 11,000 installed in public safety buildings nationwide. This effort aligns with the FirstNet Authority’s goal for reinvestments in network improvements.
As FirstNet expands, there’s a push for the reauthorization of the FirstNet Authority’s operational mandate, which is set to expire in 2027. Public safety organizations are urging Congress to ensure the continuity of this essential communication tool. The National Council of State Legislatures emphasized this need, urging Congress to act swiftly.
