Vodafone has entered into a major agreement with SP Energy Networks (SPEN), the network arm of ScottishPower, to enhance the telecoms infrastructure supporting Scotland’s electricity grid. This collaboration involves upgrading connectivity across 19,500 substations and over 64,000 kilometers of power lines, which deliver electricity to around two million homes and businesses throughout central and southern Scotland.
As part of the deal, Vodafone will supply a mix of fixed, mobile, and satellite communications, along with ongoing maintenance and operational services. These improvements aim to strengthen the reliability of SPEN’s grid, streamline the response to power faults, and support the integration of more renewable energy sources.
SPEN is focused on ensuring its infrastructure can meet growing electricity demand while aligning with the shift toward cleaner energy. The project will help safeguard existing assets while enabling the grid to adapt to future challenges.
Paul Garston, who leads Smart Grid Operations at SP Energy Networks, described the initiative as the most significant upgrade in the grid’s history. He emphasized the importance of collaborating with capable partners like Vodafone to modernize their telecommunications systems and maintain high service standards for communities.
Tom Stockwell, Vodafone UK’s Head of Key Accounts, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting Vodafone’s experience in supporting the digital evolution of the energy sector. He noted that the project is not only about enhancing SPEN’s network but also about unlocking broader benefits through improved connectivity for consumers, businesses, and the environment. Together, the two companies aim to deliver a more resilient and future-ready energy network for Scotland.
