As the buzz around 6G grows, the question on everyone’s mind is: Is 6G inevitable? Are we certain it will surpass 5G? While 5G remains a current focus, significant investments have been locked into enhancing current networks. It’s no surprise then that the transition to 6G happens amid intense debate about its timing and necessity.
Despite the controversy, work toward 6G standardization is in full swing. Recently, the 3GPP initiated formal studies for 6G standards during their meeting in Korea. ETSI further expanded on potential 6G capacities, releasing an informative white paper on Integrated and Sensing Communications (ISAC). ISAC promises to be a pivotal element of 6G, offering three integration levels and six sensing modes.
InterDigital’s Wireless Lab head, Milind Kulkarni, shared insights with RCR Wireless at MWC Barcelona. According to Kulkarni, 6G is gradually crystallizing its vision, moving from research into more tangible development. “As much as there is excitement about 6G, we can’t do everything,” he remarked. “We have to be very selective.”
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expected to play a major role in 6G, potentially rectifying what operators faced with 5G and bringing fresh innovations. The focus will shift towards establishing 6G frameworks that advance technologies beyond those of 5G. That’s no small task, considering the pace of technological evolution.
Kulkarni shed light on potential areas of exploration. These involve the advancement of MIMO technology, increasing spectral efficiency through full-duplex operations, and expanding both terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. He also emphasized the necessity for AI-centered solutions to enhance network efficiency and introduce novel services.
At MWC 2025, InterDigital demonstrated various 6G applications, underlining AI integration as a keystone in network operations. From efforts such as enhancing handset experiences while conserving energy, to using ISAC for security, AI’s versatility shines. Applications like RF-based security alerts indicate the limitless possibilities AI presents.
The journey to 6G is still in its infancy, filled with debates and questions. The inevitability of new advancements and exciting applications remains highly dependent on collaboration, innovation, and strategic selection of technologies. While the future of 6G is both uncertain and promising, one thing is clear: the foundation laid by 5G will be pivotal in the development of this next-generation technology.
