Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure have become increasingly frequent across Europe, and Germany has been especially affected. In response, safeguarding these vital assets has become a top priority for both government entities and businesses. Addressing this concern, upstart telecommunications provider OneFiber Interconnect Germany is constructing a 1.6 Tb/s optic network to strengthen Germany’s digital connectivity and counteract potential threats. This ambitious project leverages Ciena‘s advanced optical networking technology to ensure high-speed and secure data transmission.

At the forefront of innovation, OneFiber has implemented Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme to provide unparalleled bandwidth capacity. This enables the network to handle growing digital demands efficiently. At the Bahn-Technologie-Campus (BTC) Havelland near Berlin, a state-of-the-art campus network powered by Ciena allows enterprises and government agencies to develop and test solutions in a realistic environment. Clients can tailor applications and validate products under real conditions, helping to identify and rectify vulnerabilities.

OneFiber’s high-performance network also enables in-depth security analysis. It explores data security enhancements using cutting-edge technologies such as quantum key distribution (QKD). Ciena’s Waveserver platform supports 800 Gb/s optical encryption and standard open APIs for seamless integration with external QKD systems. This ensures the confidentiality of the sensitive data managed by OneFiber’s clients.

The new network includes over 5,500 km of fiber optics and up to 300 access points. This expansive system offers gigabit services, including spectrums and wavelengths from 10 Gb/s to 1.6 Tb/s. The flexibility is further enhanced by Ciena’s programmable photonics, which efficiently meets escalating bandwidth requirements and doubles fiber capacity across multiple bands.

A robust access foundation is laid with Ciena’s Coherent Routing solutions, involving 5000 and 8000 families of routers and 100G-400G coherent transceivers. This integrated IP/optical solution ensures simplified operations, scalable dynamics, and unparalleled sustainability.

Reflecting on the collaboration, OneFiber’s CEO Kay Euler stated, “Our work with Ciena represents a significant milestone in our commitment to securing Germany’s critical infrastructure. By leveraging Ciena’s innovative technology, we are empowering our customers with the highest levels of network performance, reliability, and data security—attributes especially important to our government agencies.” Euler also emphasized, “Together, we are driving digital transformation and enabling a new era of secure and resilient connectivity in the country.”
