SoftBank, a prominent telecom giant, has decided to partner with Ericsson for an ambitious upgrade of its 4G and 5G mobile networks, emphasizing artificial intelligence optimizations. This initiative spans key regions across Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Tokyo. The aim is to establish a network that offers enhanced speed, intelligence, and reliability.
A significant aspect of this upgrade is the expansion of the 5G Standalone network. Unlike the existing networks that depend on 4G infrastructure, 5G Standalone promises ultra-fast speeds and almost instantaneous response times, crucial for future technologies. Highlighting this, Hideyuki Tsukuda, Executive VP and CTO at SoftBank, stated, “SoftBank will promote network enhancement with a focus on 5G Standalone deployment and AI utilisation, delivering an outstanding user experience for both enterprise and consumer customers in Japan.”
For Ericsson, this partnership is part of a broader vision. Chafic Nassif, their Head of Market Area North East Asia, noted that their collaboration will elevate customer experiences via AI and automation. “SoftBank has been at the forefront of connectivity engagement through every generation of mobility. As digitalisation ramps up, Ericsson will work closely with SoftBank in our strengthened partnership to help drive its digital leadership ambitions through improved end-user experiences, AI, and automation.”
A notable advantage of this upgrade is the introduction of an environmentally friendly 5G antenna. This new equipment consumes up to 35% less energy compared to previous versions. But perhaps more impressive is the integration of advanced baseband units, which house tailor-made chips capable of executing AI processes right on the mast. Hence, SoftBank’s network can intelligently manage real-time decisions, enhance 5G signals, and address issues instantaneously, while conserving energy.
