Amazon Web Services (AWS) has advanced its renewable energy efforts in India with a significant commitment. The tech giant has signed an agreement with Malaysia-based renewable company, Gentari, for an 80MW wind power project in Tamil Nadu. This deal aligns with AWS’s ambitious target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The project forms part of Tamil Nadu’s Karur Wind Development zone, known for its growing capacity in renewable energy. Moreover, once operational by mid-2027, it will generate approximately 300,000 MWh of clean energy annually. The region is already home to significant wind developments by Everrenew Energy and Tata Power, which, combined with Adani’s 2.5 GW transmission capability, underscores Tamil Nadu’s role as a renewable energy hub.

This initiative further strengthens AWS’s energy portfolio in India, supplementing its existing deals with CleanMax and BluePine Energy. Notably, these earlier deals involve wind farms in Karnataka, amounting to a total of 199 MW. The sustainable energy produced will bolster AWS’s growing cloud infrastructure, especially in its Mumbai and Hyderabad facilities.

AWS’s strategic expansion in India is noteworthy. Earlier this year, it announced an $8.3 billion investment to scale up its cloud infrastructure in the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) region. This investment reflects its broader commitment to India, amounting to $12.7 billion by May 2023. AWS’s investments have already seen significant inputs in Mumbai and Hyderabad, which began in 2016 with $3.7 billion.

Jeff Johnson, AWS’s managing director for ASEAN, elaborated on the regional and global significance of such collaborations. “This partnership moves us closer to our 2040 net-zero goal,” he explained.
