Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson is making strategic moves to enhance the accessibility and utility of network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) by acquiring a minority stake in the US-based firm LotusFlare. LotusFlare provides a Digital Network Operator (DNO) Cloud platform, facilitating API monetization and consent management for network services.

In a white paper produced by its sister company, Omdia, LotusFlare highlights key obstacles that developers face when accessing telco APIs. The first hurdle involves procurement and contracting complexities. Developers often struggle with diverse commercial models, hampering efforts for a straightforward onboarding process.

LotusFlare claims its DNO Cloud platform can mitigate these challenges, potentially creating a smoother market entry for Ericsson and its API initiatives.

Niklas Heuveldop, CEO of Vonage, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “The combination of Ericsson’s high-performance, programmable networks with LotusFlare’s capabilities will accelerate CSPs’ ability to unlock new capabilities.” Echoing this sentiment, Sam Gadodia, CEO of LotusFlare, stated: “Ericsson’s investment represents a powerful validation of our product innovation and market impact.”

The announcement indicates a promising advancement for Ericsson’s API strategy, particularly in conjunction with existing ventures like Aduna and Vonage, which have faced challenges to justify the initial investments. However, the exact size of the telco API market remains contentious.

Despite discrepancies in forecasts, the direction is clear: there’s substantial revenue potential in the API sector. By investing strategically and overcoming developer obstacles, Ericsson aims to secure a larger piece of this evolving landscape.
