SpaceX introduced the latest chapter of its satellite communications initiative by unveiling Starlink Mobile. This service represents a significant evolution of its direct-to-device (D2D) strategy, now leveraging second-generation low Earth orbit satellites to integrate more seamlessly with terrestrial 5G networks.

A key asset in this venture is the globally harmonized S-band satellite spectrum, acquired through EchoStar in 2025. The upgraded satellites feature advanced technology, including a large phased-array antenna, which is five times the size of its predecessors, and fourfold the bandwidth per beam. Additionally, new technical features like 20×20 MHz beams and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) capabilities will further enhance performance. SpaceX will employ the 3GPP Release-19 NR-NTN standard, dramatically improving connection quality at the edges of satellite coverage.
In preparation for a commercial launch set for mid-2027, SpaceX is actively collaborating with device and modem manufacturers to ensure widespread compatibility. This strategic move aims to maximize the utility of Starlink Mobile, making it accessible and reliable across a diverse range of devices.
